Lai Chau Prison

Built by the French colonialists in 1901 to imprison political prisoners and common criminals, this place was once known as "hell on earth" due to its harsh rule. Communist fighters such as Nguyen Luong Bang and To Hieu were imprisoned here. Currently, only some remnants of the foundations and memorial plaques remain, as most of the site was submerged when the Son La hydroelectric dam was built.
